PIANO LESSONS
Lessons
Lessons are weekly and are thirty minutes in duration. Students have an individually planned course to ensure that they make progress and this includes sight reading, aural and technical skills.
Teachers are skilled in teaching various styles of music: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary Popular and Jazz.
There is no pressure for students to take Piano Examinations; many of our students take lessons for their own pleasure. However, Associated Music Teachers has a fine record of examination success where students elect to be entered for ABRSM examinations.
Beginners would find the piano tutor book Michael Aaron's Piano Piano Course Lessons - Grade 1 an invaluable starting book. Just click on the piano music link at the bottom of this column.
Adults
All piano/keyboard lessons are delivered individually. About 65% of the students we teach are adults who may or may not have had lessons in the past. This is nothing new to us and we are very experienced at teaching restarters or complete novices of all ages. We are more than happy to have an initial chat/meeting to discuss lessons.

Children
Generally, we do not advise that children younger than 7 years of age begin formal piano lessons, although there are exceptions where a youngster has shown considerable talent.
In those rare occasions where a child, particularly those of a very young age, does not appear to be making progress, the teachers are always honest with the parent and will discuss whether continuing with lessons, at the moment in time, is in the best interest of the child.
Most children prefer to be taught without a parent being present. However, particularly for a very young child, the parent may wish to be present for the first few lessons and this is welcomed by the piano teachers.
Instruments
In order to improve, it is essential that students have an instrument at home on which to practise.
Not everyone has an acoustic piano at home, because of expense or lack of space. However, an electronic keyboard with a mimimum of 40 white, full sized keys, would be acceptable until the student reaches a stage where a piano needs to be purchased.
We are more than happy to discuss and advise on instrument purchases.
